Dr Gwen Adshead – “All the Strange Children: Childhood Adversity and the Risk of Later Violence”

November 22, 2025 @ 10:30 am - 1:00 pm

The Hallam Institute is delighted to announce that Dr Gwen Adshead will be speaking in our next online event on Saturday 22nd November on “All the Strange Children: Childhood Adversity and the Risk of Later Violence”.

Dr Gwen Adshead is a forensic psychiatrist and psychotherapist. For thirty years she has worked as a therapist with violence perpetrators in prisons and secure psychiatric hospitals. She has a particular interest in attachment theory and how that paradigm might help understand interpersonal difficulties and conflict in adulthood. Gwen has published widely on her work in academic journals and books; and has been a visiting professor at Yale and at Gresham College. Her first work for a general audience was written with her friend Eileen Horne and is titled ‘The Devil you know’ ( Faber 2021). Gwen gave the BBC’s annual Reith Lectures in 2024 on the theme of violence and its complexity.
