University of Sheffield Counselling Service, 36 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield S10 2GB

Seminar: Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the new NHS: Challenge and Threat.

We are working in a time when psychological therapies have become more widely available than ever before, but when psychoanalytic psychotherapy, a therapy with a long history in the NHS, has felt threatened – resulting in some psychotherapists feeling challenged to justify the model and pressured to compromise their practice and philosophy. This talk will explore the current situation, looking at the challenges and also the opportunities for psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the NHS. It will consider the development of models of psychoanalytic psychotherapy which are particularly relevant in the current context.

Debby Pickvance began working in the NHS over 30 years ago as one of a small  band of counsellors who were beginning to provide counselling for the first time in general practices up and down the country. Since then she has practised psychotherapy in primary care, in the voluntary sector and in secondary care. She now works as Service Manager/Consultant Psychotherapist at Macartney House Psychotherapy Service in the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust. She has a longstanding interest in making therapy available to people who do not easily access it.

Admission free to HIP members and £5 to non-members.
